Goodbye, old friend.

You’ve probably already disabled the Flash player, so today is just another day in 2020. However, for OG Digitals, there will always be a special place in our hearts for the now defunct software. Today marks the end of a digital era.

Flash brought to life an alien invasion for INDEPENDENCE DAY back in 1996, and soon studio digital marketing execs and their agency partners were on a mission to outdo each other, leveraging this breakthrough technology to bring big screen films to life on the small screen. Flash gave us the power to transport fans into fantastical places like The Matrix, and animate a trek through the Ice Age. It magically made the Hogwarts Express appear. It brought the power of Cerebro and the X-Men to life.

And while our time in Middle Earth was grand, and our tour of Springfield delightful, by the time we made it to Pandora, an old tech with a facelift was making a comeback — HTML 5. And thus the Age of Flash ended.

So today, if you were around back when Flash was the king of small screen content, pour one out for our old friend. Should auld acquaintance be forgot? Not as long as the cloud can hold source files.

Happy New Year from your friends at Hollywood In Pixels!
